Unveiling Africa Foundation: 2010 Teenagers Conference
In commemoration of Nigeria’s jubilee year, Tuesday, October 26, 2010 is scheduled to mark the official launch of Unveiling Africa Foundation Nigeria with a teenager’s nation building conference on: “The role of Nigerian Teenagers in Nigeria’s development”.
First of its kind in Nigeria, the main focus of this annual conference is on Nigerian Teenagers. Teenagers are defined as individuals between the age of 9 – 18 years or students in JSS1 – SSS3. It is our belief that Nigeria’s bright future is guaranteed in the hands of the upcoming generations; which are the Nigerian children. To enable this generation deliver a bright future for Nigeria, we strongly believe that there is a need for the Nigerian child to be inducted into a culture of critical thinking, community activism and problem solving in their developmental years.
In this vein, the Nigeria @ 50: The role of Nigerian Teenagers in Nigeria’s Development conference will be the inauguration of a movement of Nigerian teenagers who will become actively involved in the development process of Nigeria. The conference will provide a platform for the teenagers to discuss societal issues from the past 50 years while also engaging them in the process of recreating a brighter and better Nigerian future for themselves and the generation to come. This conference will inform, empower, inspire, and provide Nigerian teenagers with the tools that they need to become active nation builders.
In addition, the conference will be engaging other stakeholders in nation building, which include parents, educators, non-governmental organizations, and the government on the role that they play in supporting the Nigerian teenager contribute to the nation building process.
The goals of this conference are numerous:
- To clearly define and establish the role that Nigerian teenagers play in Nigeria’s development.
- To clearly define and establish the role that Nigerian parents, educators and government play in enabling a Nigerian teenager fulfill their role in the nation building process of Nigeria.
- To provide a platform to continuously engage Nigerian teenagers on social issues.
- To promote social activism amongst Nigerian teenagers.
- To promote civic participation amongst teenagers.
- To promote critical thinking amongst Nigerian teenagers.
- To inspire, celebrate and continue to renew the passion that Nigerian teenagers have for Nigeria and her development.
- To establish a mentorship opportunities between the participating teenagers and role model Nigerians.
The winners of UVA Nigeria @ 50 essay contest will also be announced at the conference. This groundbreaking conference will feature seasoned and renowned speakers from different works of life, educators, civil society members and students from over 100 schools in Lagos. This event will be a milestone in the history of Nigerian teenagers.
